February Birthstones - Amethyst & Bloodstone

The Traditional, Modern and Ayurvedic birthstone for the month of February is Amethyst. Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry. The name comes from the Ancient Greek a- ("not") and methustos ("intoxicated"), a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness; the ancient Greeks and Romans wore amethyst and made drinking vessels of it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale & can be various shade of purple, violet, to lavender.

The Mystical birthstone for February is Bloodstone. The mineral heliotrope, also known as bloodstone, is a form of chalcedony. The "classic" bloodstone is green chalcedony with red inclusions of iron oxide or red jasper. It has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.
